BMI Calculator
The Ponderal Index (PI) is an anthropometric measure used to assess the relative leanness or corpulence of an individual. Unlike BMI which uses height squared, PI considers the cube of height, offering a dimensionally consistent evaluation aligned with body volume.

PI is calculated as weight divided by height cubed, typically using kilograms and meters for adults:
PI = Weight (kg) / Height (m)3
For children and infants, metrics are adjusted using grams and centimeters:
PI = Weight (g) / Height (cm)3
This method better captures the three-dimensional structure of the body compared to BMI, which can underestimate body fatness especially in very tall or very short individuals.
PI is particularly valuable in pediatrics to monitor growth and detect malnutrition or obesity. Lower PI values may indicate undernutrition, while higher values correlate with increased body fat.
Although PI improves upon BMI’s limitations, it still cannot distinguish between muscle and fat mass and should be used alongside other assessments for a complete health picture.
Using the Ponderal Index provides health professionals and individuals with a nuanced tool that respects body volume differences and helps tailor health recommendations more precisely than conventional BMI.
